Liège Wanderings

If there is one place on earth I can keep visiting it is the Liège area. There’s no place so close to home where you can find yourself so far away from it. My partner and I frequently stroll through the outskirts of Liège, bading in melancholia.

There used to be so much wealth; the city and its surroundings once flourished because of the thriving mine and steel industry there. However, after the second world war the prosperous industry came to a hold, partially due to a decline of interest in steel but also because the aged factories could not compete with the new players in the field. The city and its suburbs fell into decay.

The last decade or so there has been a tremendous amount of effort to remodel the city. This certainly has paid off but “luckily” there’s quite a bit of debris left for us to indulge ourselves in.
