Haute Photographie 2024
January 2024 a new edition of Haute Photographie will take place and I will be a part of it. I will be present during all of these days and it would be great seeing you!
About Haute Photographie
Haute Photographie is a photography fair with a concept unlike any other. Haute is centered around a group exhibition, featuring works by the grand masters from the history of photography, to the youngest and most exciting young talents working with the medium today. The aim is to introduce a varied audience, from the experienced collector to the people with a passing interest, to all that the photographic medium has to offer. The fair is strengthened by a high-quality book market and a surprising talent presentation.
Haute Photographie Rotterdam 2024 will take place at Het Keilecollectief.

Vienna Art Prize
My work has been shortlisted for the Vienna Art Prize 2023 and for that occasion will be exhibited for two weeks at Gallery Steiner, which lies in the heart of the city of Vienna. The official opening and award ceremony will be on July the 27nd.

Clinic: Analoog of Digitaal?
Op zaterdag 24 juni 2023 organiseren de Fotoacademie, Focus en Nivo Schweitzer een middag met sprekers over de mogelijkheden van en de keuze tussen de beide fotografische technieken. Het oude, maar weer aan populariteit winnende analoge werken of het sinds een jaar of twintig gangbare digitaal fotograferen.

Alles onder controle
Eén van de sprekers is de fotograaf Thijs Wolzak, die zoals velen van zijn generatie de opkomst van het digitaal fotograferen heeft meegemaakt en er zijn manier van werken op heeft aangepast. Omdat het er Thijs bij het fotograferen om gaat het perspectief en de compositie onder controle te krijgen begon hij met werken op 4×5 inch, waarbij het uitsluitend de mogelijkheden van de technische camera waren die voor die volledige scherpte moesten zorgen: dus flink diafragmeren en zorgvuldig gebruik maken van de optische verstellingen.
De eerste stap die het het gebruik van de digitale techniek mogelijk maakte was het scannen. Daardoor konden achteraf verschillende gedeeltes van de foto worden samen gevoegd, toen nog echt handwerk ook omdat er wel eens kleine verschillen tussen de opnames zaten door het net niet vlak liggen van de films. Het was daardoor bijvoorbeeld niet meer nodig om die ene opname te maken net terwijl er iets gebeurde, dat kon op een andere opname worden vastgelegd. Het gebruik van een digitale achterwand, toen nog zonder live-view was een beetje teleurstellend en soms moeizaam omdat je op het kleine matglas de scherpte toch net niet perfect kon bepalen. Het monteren werd er wel makkelijker van, net als het maken van meer opnames zonder dat er hoefde te worden nagedacht over de materiaal kosten.
Uiteindelijk is Thijs overgestapt op de Canon 5D, inmiddels de MkIII, met de tilt-shift objectieven om toch al die opties voor het controleren van de compositie zoals de plek van de horizon en het verdwijnpunt beschikbaar zijn en waarbij ook nog steeds opnames worden samengevoegd, ook wel om een nog breder beeldveld te krijgen. Daarbij is het gebruik van de ‘cam-ranger’ software heel handig, Thijs kan dan rondlopen in het onderwerp om dingetjes iets te verplaatsen, wat dan direct op de iPad zichtbaar is, wat dan uiteindelijk tot de gewenste compositie leidt. Voor de manier waarop Thijs wil fotograferen is het gebruik van de digitale techniek ideaal wegens de volledige controle die hij daarmee heeft over het eindresultaat.
Liefde voor analoog
Indra Moonen daarentegen heeft een grote voorkeur voor de analoge techniek: “Afgezien van het feit dat het me in staat stelde om in mijn eigen wereld te blijven, sprak de melancholische sfeer me aan die zo kenmerkend is voor de oude technieken waar ik mee werk. Ik had voor het eerst het gevoel dat ik gereedschap in mijn bezit had dat, ook in zijn vorm, het gevoel benadrukte dat ik in mijn werk wil overbrengen. Bovendien is de traagheid van het werken met deze oude technieken op zichzelf een doelstelling geworden. Door het langzame tempo voel je elk moment intenser, in tegenstelling tot de oppervlakkige en vluchtige wereld waaraan ik probeer te ontsnappen.”
Soms analoog, soms digitaal
Sarah Wong houdt voor haar in 2003 gestarte project over transgender jongeren vast aan de analoge techniek. De 4×5 camera vraagt om de vertraging die nodig is bij een bewustzijnsproces. Maar voor andere projecten kiest ze voor de digitale techniek.” Vooral bij projecten waarin het beeld om flow en energie vraagt. Ze stelt zichzelf dus altijd de vraag: wil ik een gelaagde stilte of wil ik flow? Uiteindelijk gaat het altijd om het verhaal dat je wilt vertellen, en is de camera het instrument.
Tijdens de clinic zal Sarah er dieper op ingaan aan de hand van haar werk. Ook op wat haar inspiratiebronnen zijn: van klassieke kunstenaars tot Indiase meditatie docenten.
Crapuul in de Kelder
Crapuul in de Kelder - het vervolg
Van zaterdag 10 juni tot zaterdag 18 juni is Landbouwbelang in Maastricht het podium voor Crapuul in de Kelder. Een evenement georganiseerd door gastcurator Corina Karstenberg in opdracht van Transport Artspace. Alle activiteiten tijdens deze dagen zijn geïnspireerd op het boek Crapuul, Kroniek van een krottenwijk van Frank Bokern.
Tijdens de meer dan 25 lezingen die de schrijver inmiddels heeft gegeven over Crapuul deed hij het woord. Maar bij Crapuul in de Kelder is het podium voor oud-bewoners van het Stokstraatkwartier en de Ravelijn en voor alle mensen die nog de gevolgen ondervinden van de gigantische kloof die er in Maastricht is geslagen door de industrialisatie, de verstedelijking en de verpaupering.
Maar Crapuul in de Kelder biedt natuurlijk ook alle ruimte om herinneringen op te halen, verhalen te vertellen en om te lachen, want gelukkig hebben de krottenwijkbewoners zich ondanks alle ellende altijd weten te redden, ook dankzij hun humor. In de kelder van Landbouwbelang moet de sfeer ontstaan zoals ze die hebben gekend in het buurthuis van 'hun' legendarische zielenherder pater Castorius.
Kunstenaar LDH draagt gedichten voor, er is een balletvoorstelling, er worden films vertoond en natuurlijk zijn de weergaloze foto’s te zien die Indra Moonen heeft gemaakt van de oud-Stokstraatbewoners. Frank Bokern en Inez Jeunhomme leiden gesprekken met iedereen die langskomt en verhalen over vroeger wil delen. Acteur Maarten Brorens speelt pater Castorius en zal in andere gedaante de befaamde 'Noodkistrede' voordragen van dr. Poels. Het wordt een geweldig evenement!
Alles is gratis toegankelijk. En reserveren is niet nodig. Dus loop gezellig binnen!

Crapuul in de Kerk
The dutch writer Frank Bokern has written a fantastic book about the Stokstraatkwartier, a small neighborhood in the center of Maastricht and, without a doubt, the most peculiar victim of the industrial revolution. At first, around 1840, the neighborhood belonged to the upper class, but soon became a melting pot for the workers, beggars and prostitutes, Crapuul as they say in Maastricht. The palaces turned into ruins that continued to be inhabited by the less fortunate. It took Maastricht over a 100 years to finally intervene, its approach however being draconian.
The inhabitants were being forced to move to ‘residential schools’, meant to turn them into ‘decent’ citizens. Today this still causes a stigma around the former residents and this book has greatly helped rehabilitating them by telling their story through extensive interviews with them.
Curator Corina Karstenberg from Transport Artspace came up with the brilliant idea to have me photograph the interviewees using wet plate collodion, since this process dates from the start of this book. From May 7th until June 24th these portraits will be exhibited at the Dominicaner Bookshop. At the same time all of the portraits will be on show again at Transport Artspace at the Landbouwbelang. More info on that in a separate event.
On Thursday the 25th of May there will be an opening, starting at 19.00 hr. The opening speech will be held by the writer Frank Bokern. Artist and poet Lars den Hartog will share a poem he has written especially for this project. I will tell something about the technique used to make the images. And last but certainly not least, the former inhabitants of the Stokstraat area will tell and share their stories in person.

Transport Artspace, situated at the Landbouwbelang, organizes an exhibition around the theme Crapuul and curator Corina Karstenberg came up with the brilliant idea to have me photograph the interviewees using wet plate collodion, since the process dates from the start of this book. The results will be shown during the weekend of the Museumnacht Maastricht. There will be a sequel in June with the writer of the book, Frank Bokern himself, being present. Former residents will share their experiences in person and have an interaction with the public. I am honored to be a part of this and share this incredibly fascinating part of Maastrichter history.

Now you see me, now you don't
Room 13
Sunday April the 2nd my exhibition at the Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht will open. The work will be shown in Room 13, hence the project’s name. Part of my Wounded Land series will be on view, as well as images from the Now you see me, now you don’t series, all of them being very recent.
Wounded Land is about the ww1 landscapes where I strolled these, still utterly visibly wounded, areas around Verdun and the Somme with my camera.
Now you see me, now you don’t is a series where her own fragility and impermanence are the key elements.

Werner Mantz Fotoprijs
The Werner Mantz Foundation organizes a photo competition every 3 to 4 years. I entered this year’s competition and ended up in the top 10. All the selected works are exhibited until the 27th of February, which is also the end of the Werner Mantz overview exhibition in the Bonnefantenmuseum (also, if not foremost, worthy of a visit).
